Sunday 18th November 2007 “God Builds your Character”

Dear Friends,

Have you realized your purpose in life?

When you get a call or you hear of a sermon or church thing-a-majig somewhere… and you get that freakin feeling that you need not go, just pick yourself up and go. You will be shocked to find that that message was meant for you. This was Mama Tj,s message to the people this Sunday. Oh mama Tj is Mrs. Carol Kiamah AKA wife wa pasi.

Exodus 2:1-10 (NIV)

The Birth of Moses

1 Now a man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman, 2 and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. 3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. 4 His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him. 5 Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the river bank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her slave girl to get it. 6 She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said.

7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?”

8 “Yes, go,” she answered. And the girl went and got the baby’s mother. 9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him. 10 When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, [a] saying, “I drew him out of the water.”

Moses was born to deliver the Israelites out of Egypt , he was born at a time when istael was oppressed, multiplying fast and being enslaved.

Moses knew he was a deliverer of Israel but the Israelites did not like that version of the story. This was because this was not Gods Plan for Moses at that time. When Moses went out and killed the Egyptian soldier, he was expecting praise from his own people but all he got was mockery and was reported so he had to flea to the desert to hide from prosecution.

Exodus 2:18-23 (NIV)

Moses Flees to Midian

11 One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. 12 Glancing this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?” 14 The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “What I did must have become known.”

15 When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian, where he sat down by a well. 16 Now a priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came to draw water and fill the troughs to water their father’s flock. 17 Some shepherds came along and drove them away, but Moses got up and came to their rescue and watered their flock.

18 When the girls returned to Reuel their father, he asked them, “Why have you returned so early today?”

19 They answered, “An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds. He even drew water for us and watered the flock.”

20 “And where is he?” he asked his daughters. “Why did you leave him? Invite him to have something to eat.”

21 Moses agreed to stay with the man, who gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage. 22 Zipporah gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom, [b] saying, “I have become an alien in a foreign land.”

23 During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. 24 God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. 25 So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.

This was not Moses’ plan, it was Gods plan. God wanted to physically and psychologically prepare Moses for the task of rescuing the Israelites.

Below are a list of lessons that Moses learnt in the desert…

1. Leadership 101

Moses was a leader in Egypt, a leader made easy with a command of chariots, great people skills, the best education money then could buy, but he forgot God. On that same note, do you have all th above skills, a great degree etc but unable to find a job? God has not forgotten you, He is just operating at his pace which I tell you is not the pace of man.

basically Moses was kicked out of Egypt by God to go to the Midian desert to learn a few lessons on life the God way. He was demoted from a leader of People to a leader of Sheep so that he could be humbled. So that he could be prepared to deal with stuborn and sometimes ignorant people and not be a toothless dictator.

2. Obscurity – Insignificant, vague, remote from observation

Moses was demoted from a Chariot leader to nothing, he had to learn that God was the source of all leadership and not man. He maxed in the desert bored… that is why he probably noticed the bush that was on fire.

Yes, Moses felt the downside of the change of lifestyle but God wanted to take that opportunity to build his character.

When you are feeling totally qualified and ready to be in a great job and you don’t get it immediately and you had in plan, just rest assured that it is God who is building your character. When you think you are ready is not when God thinks you are ready.

3. Waiting

Moses was in a hurry to get his job done while he was a young man in Egypt. He know he was connected. He had army connection and government connections etc. but he forgot that he needed a go-ahead from God.

When you think you are getting old and time for you to do certain things is running out, e.g. you are over 25 and still jobless, you are over 30 and still single with no prospects of marriage, you have no savings and retirement is round the corner… God does not operate on that time line. So long as you have your trust in Him, when He thinks the time is right, you wish will be His command.

Friends you need to suffer to be a true member of Gods kingdom. God taught Moses patience so that he could go and handle the hardened Israelites.

You know you are gifted but alter call after alter call you never receive your calling. Well God is watching you and will not leave you and will call you at His convinience.

4. Loneliness

You need to go through a period of loneliness where God can take time to speak to you. He will not of course leave you totally alone but you will not have your regular friends. Moses was taken away from his friends in Egypt but was given Zipporah and a son Gershom.

Are you struggling with feelings of if you are doing the right thing or not? Well worry not, feelings are not bad and are not evil. Feelings are a communication especially if you commit them through prayer. Don’t worry if time seems to be going too fast.

Moses felt like a failure, he had lost his family, his friends in Egypt, wouldn’t you? Many of us are suffering from failures, we are in an emotional desert. God is taking us through a stage of CHARACTER BUILDING.

Romans 5:1-3 (NIV)

Peace and Joy

1Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we[a]have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we[b] rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 3Not only so, but we[c] also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;

Thank you all and have a marvelous week.

Sunday 11th November 2007 “Trust God in Prayer… Dont Give Up”

Dear Friends,

Love the un-lovable, love those people who irritate your most.

1 Samuel 1:1-8 (NIV)

1 There was a certain man from Ramathaim, a Zuphite [a] from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.

3 Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and sacrifice to the LORD Almighty at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the LORD. 4 Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the LORD had closed her womb. 6 And because the LORD had closed her womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her. 78 Elkanah her husband would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?” This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.

What kind of home do you have? what kind of life do you lead? What things irritate you? What do you see in the mirror every morning?

Take a look at situations where there are perfect families with mom, dad and the kids then somewhere along the line things go haywire and breakages and disagreements come into the picture… Do you pray for your family? Do you pray for the family unit as a whole? Look at a situation where you are great in sport, maybe swimming but your dad wants you to do maths all the way and no sports. this causes drift in the family. This was Pastor Tony’s message last Sunday to the people.

Do you struggle with stuff? Come on stuff like masturbation, need for a chick/guy in a sexual manner, the disco, a mozo… This is the stuff that causes people to drift away from Christianity, from ministry, from church.

Friends, God can handle your short comings. Moses could not control his anger but God took him and trained him in the desert for 40 years. He was taken to the wilderness and broken from Pharaohs top brass.

Friends it is never time to walk away, patience is a virtue. If you feel you have messed up, however badly please just ask God for forgiveness. Tell the Lord you love Him. You are struggling with gossip, anger, jealousy, porn… Never stop stuggling against sin, Keep trying if you have to.

What other choice do you have? Burn in hell? Go back to the enemy camp? All those issues at the back of your mind that eat you up… God can Handle them for you and resolve them.

1 Samuel 1:11-17 (NIV)

11 And she made a vow, saying, “O LORD Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.”

12 As she kept on praying to the LORD, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk 14 and said to her, “How long will you keep on getting drunk? Get rid of your wine.”

15 “Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the LORD. 16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.”

17 Eli answered, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.”

Hannah did not care if someone thought she was high on some stuff or not. It was the anguish that was in her heart that led her to cry out to the Lord without ceasing.

Find time to pour your heart out to the Lord. why would God repeat Himself of issues of prayer? This is because we are not convinced, hte bible says we should pray continually… Pray without ceasing.

Mathew 7:7 (NIV)

7“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

16Be joyful always; 17pray continually; 18give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Prayer is a matter of humility. Why we do not pray is because we think that we can sort out stuff for ourselves…

2 Chronicles 7:14 (NIV)
14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Friends, God answers prayer, Good things may come in small packages but Gods love on prayer comes in shoals (Big Bunches).

Those small things that bug you… Your weight, height, your brother who does not listen your community at war… God hears those prayers, Pray alone, find a quiet place, a field and tell God your private things, be careful if you want to share with someone else because they may be suffering with gossip. Take it to the Lord in Prayer.

God Listened to Hannah and answered her prayer.

1 Samuel 1:19 (NIV)

19 Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the LORD and then went back to their home at Ramah. Elkanah lay with Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her. 20 So in the course of time Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, [c] saying, “Because I asked the LORD for him.”
Yes, the Lord answers Prayer… All you need to do is begin by giving your life to Christ…

John 9:31 (NIV)

31We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly man who does his will.

Thank You and be blessed

Jonathan Kathukya.

Sunday 4th November 2007 “Be Wise and Considerate”

Dear Friends,

Lets look at the book of Acts, it was written by Luke, this fella was around at the time of Jesus but did not walk around with him as much at the rest of the disciples, its important to note though that he took great interest in what Jesus did, every move, Luke by the way is the one who wrote the gospel of according to Luke, he was wrote this gospel not for the fun of writing but was commissioned by Theophisus to give an account ot the life of Christ.

Luke 1:4 (NIV)

1Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled[a]2just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. 3Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

Well anyway lets get back to Acts, Luke here gives a new account, the aftermath… Now that Christ is Gone, what next? there is the beginning of the church, the day of Pentecost with the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the the coming of many to know Christ and the savior of the world.

In chapter 3 Peter performs the miracle of healing of the crippled beggar at the gates of the temple called beautiful. This act mesmerizes people.

Acts3:6-10 (NIV)

6Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” 7Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. 8He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. 9When all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

Chapter four of the same tells us of the importance of being found worthy of for the sake of Jesus Christ. That it it is not your education that matters at all, its you and the faith you have. It does not take a rocket scientist to get close to the Lord. It does take a brain surgeon to accept Christ and live in his ways an righteous life.

Acts 4:13-14(NIV)

13When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. 14But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say.

Chapter five reminds us that the Lord can see the deepest and most secret intentions of the heart. For example when to comes to giving dont think that you can cone God… Like I thought I could do some time back… Remember that it is the Lord who has given you and the Lord can see the things you do in secret. Ask Ananias and his wife who sold a piece of property and kept back part of the money thinking they could hide…

Acts 5:1-11 (NIV)

1Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.

3Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God.”

5When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened. 6Then the young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.

7About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”
“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”

9Peter said to her, “How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”

10At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.

By the way over time you can tell the intentions of the heart of a man from the way he speaks.

Lets take a look at preachers who turn to politics, is it really right? The Lord has annointed you to spread his word then you descide that you are fit to be a king?!?!?! Look at the Kings that God Chose in the bible, none of them where the priests or the hight priests, God went into the house of Jesse and took the Shepard Boy Joseph and annointed him the be King. In that saying that the office of the king and the office of the king and the office of the preacher are two totally different callings.

Romans 13:1-2(NIV)

1Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

It is the Lord who ordains leaders.

We, Kenya are a blessed nation. the question is do we appreciate the things that God has done for us? Do we count our blessings, the government that the Lord has given us that has developed the nation so much. Think about it… when you have  G in your wallet you doent even think of it… how about when you have a pound? you touch your pocket constantly to check if it is still there.

Ya there are too many things we take for granted. Look at he US embassy, it is full of people, especially the youth trying to get visas to get out of Kenya, yes… many young people are sick of Kenya yet we seldom remember our country in prayer. There are some who even consider it a curse having been born a Kenyan but friends… Kenya is a great country.

South Africa is way ahead of Kenya, akina McDonalds, J.C Penny, Tesco (International) are all there, SA is amazingly beautiful but friends… Blacks in SA live like Guys in Kibich in Kenya. The blacks where shot for refusing to learn the language of the white man (Africaans). 40% of the GDP of Africa is in SA, they assemble thier own cars but friends, note that all the hot stuff belongs to the  white man… No offence to the “Mzungu” But Africa belongs to Africans… Imagine if Africans owned Lloyds of London? the “Mzungu” would go nyuthes. There are 19,000 cold blooded murders in SA reported in the papers, the TV reports 24,000… there are more Murders in SA than there are in Somalia and Shiftas in Somalia are at war!!!

Crime in Kenya has relatively gone down. People in Cameroon live to come to Kenya.. Kenya to them is a dream come true. By the way our fast food restaurants are upto international standards… that is unheard of in Cameroon. Here there is freedom of expression, In Cameroon it is different… it like Kenya when we first got independence… when the presi is passing, they close shop 20 minutes before and 40 minutes after he has passed, they are still throwing wood. That means in an afternoon from 3pm, that would be the end of the day.

Anyway back to Leadership in Kenya. We need to pray and we need to have the right tools… VOTERS CARD… Pray for God to show you the best leader to vote for. Lets not fight over these politicians… like fighting over Kibaki and Raila… Remember who was chief guest at Raila’s kids bash? ha ha ha Kibaki. Why are we fighting over friends? The people who failed Kenya in the Moi era are still in power. They are driving the brand new range rover before it even fikad USA.

We support akina ManU and Arsenal because football in Kenya is corrupted by the leaders we voted for. We need to get manufacturing companies to come to Kenya by voting wisely and prayerfully. Kenya is a great country and may God Bless Kenya.

Sunday 28th October 2007 “Your Journey”

Dear Friends,

Yes, I have typed a very catchy topic here but I don’t quite have much to say on it because every individual has their own journey, their own way and guided by their own set of do’s, dont’s, past’s, risks and uncertainties.

This Sunday a very good friend of mine, Nyambura Gichuki was giving the sermon, representing the interns at ICC. Her sermon was more or less her testimony and I don’t really do those so, as usual, I will do my best to paint the general picture. I hope you will all bear with me.

Just because you are in steers does not mean you are a steak

Just because you are in chicken in does not make you a chicken

Just because you are in Church does not make you a Christian

These where the words the words that touched me most, I have been thinking about them and will do so for a long time. Imagine the number of you, me dear friends who come to church to each and every Sunday and till today have not know the purpose of Church. Not known the purpose why Christ suffered and died on the cross, sinless but still shed His blood!!!

I will come back to that part later. Friends do you ever sit back and look at your life as a complete waste, a mess, a total failure, do you sometimes look at you failures and let them run your life?

Friends I would kindly request you to take a good look at you life and who runs it, it it your peers or your ego or Christ the Lord? Think about it…
